RUNNING OUT OF TIMENEW MAGIC WANDA BOY IS A GUN*

NEW MAGIC WAND is the sixth song from Tyler, the Creator's sixth studio album Igor (2019). It is an energetic track that centers itself around urging the love interest (discussed throughout the album) not to leave the singer. The song opens with Jerrod Carmichael saying, "sometimes you gotta close a door to open a window."[1]

A snippet of the song was shared on May 14 to promote the album's incoming release. It was the last snippet shared prior to the album's release three days later.[2]

Background[]

Some fans misattributed the "like magic, like magic, like magic wand" vocals towards the beginning of the track to A$AP Rocky, when in reality it was just pitched down Tyler vocals. Santigold appears on the song after being featured on the "Lights On" off Music Inspired by Illumination & Dr. Seuss' The Grinch (2018).[3]

T has discussed the song several times since its release, the first of which was him saying that the song is his favorite from Igor, followed by "RUNNING OUT OF TIME" and "I DON'T LOVE YOU ANYMORE."[4] Later that same day, he tweeted that not only is it his "favorite song [he has] made," but also "executed perfectly," precisely at the 1:25 mark, which is the start of the song's third verse.[5] To celebrate the ten year anniversary of Tyler's debut mixtape Bastard (2009), he wrote that "NEW MAGIC WAND is really just the perfected idea of FRENCH."[6]

Live performances[]

When performing the song live, Tyler starts by breathing hard on the microphone as elements of the song build up in the background. Eventually, he pauses before the main part of the song kicks off.[7]

For his 2020 Grammy performance, he performed a quick medley of "EARFQUAKE" with Charlie Wilson and Boyz II Men before starting the song with the aforementioned intro. He also performed an alternate bridge to the song with the other artists.[8]

Snippet[]

The song's official snippet features Tyler performing the song's beginning in front of a small audience in a desert. The song cuts off shortly after the bridge begins, with the visuals for that section being Tyler running away. The video's caption reads "best concert of all time, thanks santigold."[2]
