Tyler Gregory Okonma (born March 6, 1991), better known as Tyler, The Creator is an American rapper, record producer, director, actor and fashion designer. The co-founder of the since-disbanded Odd Future collective, Tyler has come to become an icon in the American rap scene.
His discography consists of eight projects. The first two – Bastard (2009) and Goblin (2011) – are known for their more coarse subject matter. After a transition period with Wolf (2013) and Cherry Bomb (2015), the latter of which introduced a bunch of new elements, sounds, and genres to Tyler's sounds, Tyler has achieved mainstream success with his three latest works. Flower Boy (2017) was nominated for the Best Rap Album at the 2018 Grammy Awards, but lost to Damn by Kendrick Lamar. Since then, he has won the category twice with Igor (2019) and Call Me If You Get Lost (2021). In 2024, he released his eighth project, Chromakopia (2024).
Aside from his music career, he has appeared in several television shows such as Loiter Squad, Nuts + Bolts, and The Jellies!, and started his own clothing brands such as GOLF WANG and GOLF LE FLEUR*.
Early Life[]
Tyler Okonma was born on March 6, 1991, in Hawthorne, California, the son of a father with Igbo ancestry and an American mother of mixed African-American and European-Canadian descent. He claims to have never met his father, and has since shown a distaste for him in songs such as "Answer" And "Inglorious". However, in the Chromakopia song "Like Him", Tyler’s mother admits that he wanted to be a father to Tyler. Throughout his early life, he lived in Ladera Heights and nearby Hawthorne, attending twelve different schools throughout the Los Angeles and Sacramento areas.
At the age of seven, he would take the cover out of an album's case and create covers for his own imaginary albums—including a track list with song lengths—before he could even make music. At the age of 14, he taught himself to play the piano. He also revealed in an interview that he had worked at a FedEx for just under two weeks, and Starbucks for over two years.[1]
Career[]
2007-2011: Early career[]
In 2007, Tyler started Odd Future, an alternative hip hop collective that released two mixtapes through 2012. It was during this period that he embraced dark themes, often singing offensive and obscene lyrics on relatively-minimalistic instrumentals. His first album Bastard was released in 2009, with Goblin following two years later.
2012-2016: Transition in style[]
Tyler released Wolf in April 2013, an album that continued some storytelling set up by Bastard (2009) and Goblin (2011), but also marked a shift in sound with more multi-genre influences in its sound.
At the same time, although Odd Future came together for the Adult Swim show Loiter Squad (2012-2014), the collective started to bend apart as Tyler and Frank Ocean devoted more time to their successful solo careers.
In April 2015, Tyler released Cherry Bomb, an album that marked as a full departure from the story continuity explored in every project before it. It also contained arguably the most diverse range of sounds in his career so far, yet it received mixed reviews from fans. Tyler seemed to display his dismay with the lukewarm response to Cherry Bomb on the throwaway track "FUCK IT" (2015).
2017-2020: Mainstream success[]
Tyler's sixth project Flower Boy marked not only his first album to gain mainstream success and a Grammy nomination, but the first album of his to embrace his homosexual identity. Although he lost the race for Best Rap Album to Kendrick Lamar's DAMN. in 2018, his next project Igor won. Igor was a conceptual album featuring a love triangle and a synth-heavy sound.

In between Flower Boy and Igor, Tyler released a handful of throwaway songs that - for the most part - have not been released on streaming platforms. On "OKRA" (2018), he confirmed that Odd Future had effectively disbanded. He also released his own take on "You're A Mean One, Mr. Grinch" for Illumination's The Grinch (2018) movie and released an EP for the same film.
2021-present: Sustained success[]
In June 2021, Tyler released his seventh project, Call Me If You Get Lost, which served mainly as a victory lap of the mainstream success that he had earned in recent years. He also earned a second consecutive Grammy Award for Best Rap Album in 2022.
In a break from tradition, Tyler did not release a new album in 2023. Instead, he released several cut songs from CMIYGL in the form of The Estate Sale. The following year, he released Chromakopia, a project laden with introspective lyrics about his own growth and the relationships he has had throughout the years.
