Who Dat Boy is the fifth track from Tyler, the Creator's fifth studio album Flower Boy (2017). It is an intense rap track that features vocals from Tyler's friend rapper A$AP Rocky.[1] It was released as the lead single to the album on July 30, 2017, alongside "911 / Mr. Lonely." A music video for both songs was released a day before.[2]

Who Dat Boy Source of Inspiration

A still from the Jerrod Carmichael interview showing the image that inspired the song.

Tyler has described "Who Dat Boy" as his opportunity on the album to exit the personal, gentle lyricism that dominates the project.[3] He also offered the track to ScHoolboy Q, but he simply did not like the track.[4] Instead, he went to A$AP Rocky with a temporary verse on it but worked on it more and added the back-and-forth part to fit more into his liking.[3][5]

He also elaborated on how a 2005 photo by Jonas Bendiksen titled Sukhumi beach, 2005 inspired him to make the song's intro. In the photo, people are on a beach but a woman standing close to the camera looks past the camera towards something that seems to be coming. Tyler said he wanted to make the song's intro sound like what was coming, instead of what was inside the frame of the picture.[5] The photographer has revealed that the image was taken in Sukhumi, Abkhazia, the capital of a partly recognized state.[6]

Tyler said at a 2017 performance that the song is from "fucking December 2015." During that same performance, A$AP Rocky tried to say they would release a mixtape together.[7]

When the album was re-released in Dolby Atmos and Sony 360 Audio on the album's five-year anniversary, streaming listeners can hear Tyler say "Vans overalls and a striped shirt" instead of "Cons' overalls and a stripe shirt." This means the improved audio version of the track uses a different take.[8]
